What image DPI actually means
DPI means dots per inch. In everyday photo workflows, it is often used as shorthand for how densely image pixels will be placed on a physical print. A 2400 × 3000 pixel image printed at 300 DPI measures 8 × 10 inches.
The DPI number stored in a file does not create detail. Pixel dimensions determine how much source information the image contains. Changing metadata from 72 DPI to 300 DPI without adding pixels changes the intended print scale, not the image quality.

DPI and PPI are related, but not identical
PPI describes pixels per inch in an image or display. DPI technically describes printer dots per inch. Consumer print tools often use “DPI” for both, but this checker calculates the effective image pixels per printed inch.

Is 72 DPI good enough for printing?
The metadata value alone cannot answer that. A large image marked 72 DPI may still contain enough pixels for a sharp smaller print. Use the pixel dimensions and desired print size to calculate effective DPI.
Can I convert 72 DPI to 300 DPI?
You can change metadata, but that does not add image detail. To increase the physical size at 300 DPI, you need more pixels from the source or from careful resampling.
Why does my image show no DPI?
Some formats and export workflows omit resolution metadata. The image can still be evaluated for print because its pixel width and height are available.
