When converting JPG to PNG helps
Use this when an application specifically requires PNG or when you want a PNG copy for further editing. Choose a JPEG file and select Convert to PNG. PNG compression is lossless for the decoded pixels, so this step avoids another JPEG compression pass. It does not recover information the original JPEG already discarded.
PNG does not make the background transparent
A JPEG has no transparent pixels. Converting it to PNG gives you a format capable of transparency, but the original background remains. This tool does not identify subjects or remove backgrounds. For example, a product photo on white still has an opaque white background in the PNG.
Why is my PNG much larger?
JPEG is efficient for photographic detail. PNG stores decoded pixels using lossless compression, which can require substantially more bytes. There is no JPEG-style quality slider here. Compare the reported size with the receiving service's limit; keep the JPEG when compatibility and file size matter more than PNG output.
Same pixels, different file format
A 2400 x 1600 JPEG becomes a 2400 x 1600 PNG. Conversion does not crop, upscale, sharpen, or increase print resolution. Use the dimensions checker for inspection and the resizer for smaller dimensions. To return to JPEG, use PNG to JPG.
Local processing and compatibility
Input must be JPG or JPEG up to 40 MB and 20 megapixels, with output edges up to 8192 pixels. The browser must be able to decode the image. A newly encoded PNG does not copy source EXIF or a custom DPI tag, and this is not a color-profile-preserving archival conversion. Your original remains unchanged and is not uploaded.
If your source is WebP and you need to keep its existing transparent pixels, use WebP to PNG.
